Chargesheet Names Yasin Malik as Mastermind in 1990 Sarla Bhat Murder Case After 37-Year Investigation
The State Investigation Agency of Jammu and Kashmir has filed a 737-page chargesheet naming jailed JKLF chief Yasin Malik as the alleged mastermind behind the 1990 kidnapping, gang rape, and murder of Kashmiri Pandit nurse Sarla Bhat. The case, reopened in 2024, marks a significant breakthrough after 37 years and is supported by ballistic evidence, witness testimonies, and official records.
According to the chargesheet, investigators have accused Yasin Malik of orchestrating the brutal crime as part of a larger campaign intended to terrorize the Kashmiri Pandit community and force its displacement from the Kashmir Valley. The investigation also names four other operatives of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front in connection with the case.
Among those named is Khurshid Ahmad Chalkoo, identified as the alleged shooter, who is currently believed to be in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The chargesheet is supported by ballistic evidence, witness testimonies, and official records collected during the course of the investigation, forming the basis of the prosecution's case.
The reopening of the investigation in March 2024 led to what officials describe as a significant development in a case that had remained unresolved for nearly four decades. The filing of the chargesheet represents one of the rare breakthroughs among approximately 140 similar killings linked to the violence that targeted members of the Kashmiri Pandit community during that period.
The development has drawn strong reactions from members of the Kashmiri Pandit community. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rajeev Pandita described the filing of the chargesheet as a ray of hope for long-delayed justice. Sarla Bhat's cousin, P. K. Bhat, also welcomed the progress in the investigation, although members of her family said the pursuit of justice had come too late after waiting 37 years.
The chargesheet marks a significant legal milestone in the prolonged pursuit of accountability for one of the most disturbing crimes of 1990. As judicial proceedings move forward, the case is expected to remain a closely watched development, carrying profound legal and historical significance for the victims' families and the broader Kashmiri Pandit community.
